This guide aims to help you choose the most suitable sacrificial animal or Aqiqah for your needs.
First: Choosing the sacrificial animal
(All meet the requirements)
Basic conditions for the sacrifice:
- It must be from the livestock (cows, sheep, or camels).
- To reach the legal age:
The cow: two years or more.
Calf: Two years or older.
Goats (rams): One year or older.
Sheep (Suwakni): Six months or older.
- It must be free from visible defects.
- Time of slaughter: From after the Eid prayer until sunset on the thirteenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah.

It is sufficient for: seven people.
Approximate number of beneficiaries:
-100 - 120 people.
calf
It is sufficient for: seven people.
Approximate number of beneficiaries:
-50-60 people.
Swakni
- It is sufficient for: one person only.
Approximate number of beneficiaries:
-14 – 17 people.
goat
- It is sufficient for: one person only.
Approximate number of beneficiaries:
-10 – 13 people.
Second: Choosing the Aqiqah
The same conditions regarding safety and age are required for the Aqiqah (birth sacrifice).
The required number:
- Regarding the male: two sheep (Tisan or Suakinian).
- Regarding the female: one sheep (a goat or a Swakni).
A goat for the Aqiqah
- It is sufficient for: one newborn female, or half an 'aqiqah for a male (requires two male goats).
Swakni for Aqiqah
- It is sufficient for: one newborn female, or half an 'aqiqah for a male (two are needed).
Is a cow or a calf sufficient for the 'aqiqah?
It is preferable that the 'aqiqah sacrifice be from sheep (a male goat or a female goat), as this is the best and closest to the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ
